  • WIDE SHOT (WEB STORIES THAT CAUGHT OUR EYE)

Here's what VERONICA MARS editor Daniel Gabbe (AFI Class of 2000) said in a recent interview with Alumni Connection, the AFI Conservatory's newsletter, when asked about his favorite film editor: "It's easy for me to point to one editor in particular, which would have to be Thelma Schoonmaker. I actually decided I wanted to be a film editor while watching GOODFELLAS once, and she was honored at our AFI graduation, so it was very special to walk across that stage and see her sitting there!" You'll get a strong sense of why Schoonmaker is so widely admired when you read this interview from Yahoo's movie blog.

In Daniel Schweiger's in-depth interview with NEED FOR SPEED composer Nathan Furst in filmmusicmag.com, the two often seem to be engaged in a tug of war — on the subject of film vs. video game music, for example. But it's Furst's steadfast belief in writing musical themes that express the inner lives of characters and are not merely a soundtrack for fast cars that we find most impressive — that, and the symphonic score. See if you agree.

  • AFI CLOSEUP: SETH PIERSON

To find Seth Pierson, AFI's Photo Editor and Archivist, Information Services, one must climb a back stairway to the third floor of the Louis B. Mayer Library. Pierson's office is no dark room; it is painted bright yellow and sits under a dramatic skylight. The man is bombarded by Vitamin D. A BLUE VELVET poster is pinned to the door and a framed image of a cup of coffee hangs on the wall.

Where did you grow up? I grew up right outside of New Orleans. I was born and lived there the first 18 years of my life — until I came out to California.

Where did you go to school? I went to USC and studied Screenwriting.

How did you become a photographer? Well, I had had toy cameras all throughout my youth. But, as part of my screenwriting studies, USC had us take classes that were filmmaking-related, beyond just writing courses. And one of those was a Photography for Writers class. And for that class, I had to get an old manual 35-millimeter film camera and lenses. I learned to shoot on slide film. I caught the photography bug then, and it was rather incurable.

What did you do before you came to AFI? Professionally? Nothing! I started temping at AFI about three months after I graduated from school. My friend, who was another screenwriting student with me at USC, told me that AFI needed temp workers. I temped here for two and a half years. I've been here since July 2006.

What do you do at AFI? In many ways, I am a one-person department. I handle all the photos that AFI keeps of its events, I manage all the photographers and the photography at our current events, and I edit and source photos for anyone within AFI who needs photos. I also shoot where and when I can. My role has grown more managerial in the last few years just because the scope and the number of photographers at the events has grown so much larger. I don't really have time any more to shoot and edit and manage all the other photos that need to get places. But I do take the chance when I get it to shoot, and yesterday I shot Jane Fonda's Harold Lloyd Master Seminar, which was wonderful in and of itself, but also really a fun thing to be able to photograph.

What was your best day at AFI? What gives me the most satisfaction — and I can't pin it to a specific day — is when people see the photos I've seen and I see the surprise and happiness on their faces, reacting to photos that have not been seen by anyone in my lifetime. I get to deal with many, many photos that people literally haven't seen for as long as I've been alive. And it's always exciting — not just to find them myself, but to be able to share them with other people. I find them in the archives and in the process of scanning and editing them. That's a joy for me personally, but it's even more fulfilling to me — especially as I've gone on further in the job — to be able to really surprise people.

Which do you consider your best photograph, and how did it come about? My personal photography tends to be much more documentary than event-based. I've taken some portraits, but to me the most meaningful photos that I've ever taken are of the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans. Every December since 2006, I would go home for Christmas, travel out to the Lower Ninth Ward, which was completely wiped out by the levee failure the day after Hurricane Katrina landed, and take photos there.

What are you working on today? This morning I shot an alumni reunion breakfast where some folks who are now in the industry came to talk to Second Year cinematographers about what they can expect. And now I am working to pay off all of the invoices for the Jane Fonda photos that we'll be putting in the tribute book that we give out at the event.

What don't your colleagues know about you? Secrets! Most people don't know that I have turned my apartment into a recording studio, and I have been teaching myself to record music for years and years and years. I'm finally almost done with the first single I plan to offer on iTunes.

Who would you cast to play you in the film story of your life? Mm... for physical accuracy's sake, I would say Channing Tatum. For dramatic realism, I would probably say Ryan Gosling. [Laughing.]

What's your favorite movie? My favorite movie is THE BIG LEBOWSKI. I make no claims of it being the best movie ever — and I don't think I could decide on that — but it's by far my favorite movie ever because I know that if there is any one point that I drop in or tune out, when I come back, the line or the scene or the moment will be perfect.
