    AFI CLOSEUP: PAUL JACQUES

There are many fascinating individuals among the staff and faculty at your American Film Institute and we thought we'd ask them 10 questions in a new monthly feature, “AFI Closeup.” Ready for his closeup this month is Paul Jacques, Vice President, Infrastructure.

    1. Where are you from? I'm from Hudson, Ohio, a small town in Northeastern Ohio.

    2. Where did you go to school? I went to Western Reserve Academy for high school, USC for my undergraduate program and I'm now at Pepperdine University, getting my MBA, which I will complete next month.

    3. What did you do before you came to AFI? I was the Director of IT (Information Technology) for 525 Studios, which was a high end postproduction facility. We did music videos and commercials.

    4. How long have you been at AFI? Thirteen and a half years.

    5. What do you do at AFI? A lot! I manage the Institute's IT infrastructure and IT department and am also responsible for the physical plant. This includes managing the recent campus renovations funded by AFI's capital improvement bond. So I do everything from making sure that the toilets work to seeing that the computer network is reliable.

    6. How does that affect members? We put new systems in place that allow for better communication and follow-up with members. And next year we are looking to upgrade the AFI Catalog of Feature Films database and interface.

    7. What was your best day at AFI? Ah, there have been a few. Certainly, the day we cut the ribbon on the new stairs (between the Warner Bros. Building and the Louis B. Mayer Library). That was a very, very great day following a long and arduous process. It was really the first project we did with the capital improvement funds and it started a landslide of happy events that led to getting HVAC (heating and cooling) in the Warner Bros. Building, renovating the library and much more. When the bond funds first became available, I looked at the wish list AFI wanted to do when we acquired the campus in 1980, and replacing the stairs topped that list. So it had been a longstanding project and we finally had the means to do it.

    8. What are you working on today? Today I'm supervising the next phase of HVAC installation in the Warner Bros. Building. It will be the first time for centralized heat and air conditioning in that historic 1929 building.

    9. What don't your colleagues know about you? A lot of people don't know that I'm a pretty active part-time musician. In fact, I have a gig tonight at the Alex Theater. It's a benefit for stroke victims. I play with my girlfriend, who is a singer, and I play guitar in a couple of other bands around town.

    10. What's your favorite film? It's a toss-up between YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974) or THE ELEPHANT MAN (1980). Both black and white – one of the funniest films ever made and one of the most emotional films ever made.
