ROGEN & GOLDBERG ON EDITING COMEDY
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg screened their latest comedy THIS IS THE END and spoke with AFI Conservatory Fellows at a Harold Lloyd Master Seminar (HLMS) moderated by AFI Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence James Hosney on June 5 in the Mark Goodson Theater on the AFI Campus. In this excerpt from their talk, the hilarious hyphenates (producer-director-screenwriter-actors) discuss scripted comedy vs. improvised scenes in their films, which include SUPERBAD (2007), PINEAPPLE EXPRESS (2008) and THE WATCH (2012), written with Jared Stern. The pair also discuss the challenges of editing improvised scenes.
The Harold Lloyd Master Seminar series – named after silent film legend Harold Lloyd, who gave the first seminar in 1969 – brings AFI Fellows together with artists to share their work and experiences in an informal and accessible setting and are among AFI Conservatory's most popular programs. In the months ahead, American Film™ will post classic HLMS talks with such artists as Robert De Niro, Alfred Hitchcock and Meryl Streep in this space, along with abridged versions of the most recent encounters.
