  • AFI CLOSEUP: ROSCHOUNE FRANKLIN

Roschoune Franklin, AFI's Director of Human Resources, is usually the one asking the questions – in interviews with prospective staffers, insurance providers and the like. We turned the tables on the Los Angeles native the week before the Institute's winter break to find out more about the woman and her work. A quick survey of poster art in Franklin's office found a prominent spot for ANTWONE FISHER along with framed motivational art: "Attitude," "Teamwork" and "Be the Bridge."

Where did you go to school? I went to high school in Los Angeles, and then I attended San Jose State University.

What did you do before you came to AFI? Well, immediately graduating from college, I started working at MaxiCare Health Plans, which is no longer in business. But I started there as an administrative assistant to the Vice President of Human Resources.

How long have you been at AFI? I've been here since January 2000. And an interesting story about that is – when my older daughter was in the eighth grade and we were looking for a high school, her English teacher told her about Immaculate Heart, which is next door. I knew nothing about Immaculate Heart. I was working at Jones inner-cable at that time as the HR manager, and it was a distance from here. So that's how I learned about AFI. I was like, "wow, if I could get a job there, that would just be perfect. I could work there for four years until she graduates."

Has it been perfect? Well, it's been good – because I've been here more than the four years. It just so happened that about a month later, before she graduated, there was an ad in the newspaper for Human Resources manager for AFI. So I applied for it, and the rest is history. My daughter has graduated high school, undergraduate and graduate. And I'm still here!

What do you do at AFI? As the HR Director, I'm responsible for creating and implementing – with the approval and the collaboration of senior management –policies and procedures. I am the lead person in any litigation or employee relations concerns here at AFI. I am also responsible for any contracts that we have, whether it's workers comp, employee liability insurance or officers liability insurance – any insurance that has to do with the employee, not just medical and dental. I am also responsible for the security here on Campus. The security department reports to HR, as do the switchboard and the service center, which is the mailroom.

How does that affect AFI members? This office does touch everything that is AFI. My main focus is on the employee base and our faculty and our Fellows and, of course, any visitors that step on the AFI grounds. So I do kind of touch every little area.

What are you working on today? Well, it's no secret that we've been having some challenges with our parking here on Campus, and that falls under my umbrella. So, about maybe a week ago, I sent an e-mail out to the employee base, giving them an update on where we are with parking and trying to remain neighborly with our neighbors in the surrounding area. Our focus right now is to try to secure off-site parking and contract with different businesses close to AFI, so that, for 2014, we can get some resolution to the parking challenges and move on.

What don't your colleagues know about you? Most people are surprised when they find out I have a 26-year-old daughter, and a 15-year-old. One thing that people don't know about me is I'm really a fun person! You know, sometimes when you work in the HR department, folks don't get to know the personal side. I'm really a fun person and I'm an avid reader.

What's your favorite film? My favorite film would have to be ANTWONE FISHER. That story shows how you can overcome adversity and not become a victim of it – just by pushing forward and becoming all that you thought you could become. I could watch that film over and over again.

  • CONTRIBUTIONS POUR IN FOR 2013 CAMPAIGN FOR PRESERVATION

In December we asked AFI members and friends to support our efforts to preserve the AFI Archive. The Archive is our nonprofit organization’s extraordinary collection of rare and unparalleled lectures and conversations featuring masters of filmmaking sharing their wisdom with Fellows at the AFI Conservatory. Such a collection is important to any film lover, not just a student of film, and we saw this in a wonderful surge in contributions made toward the campaign. Thank you. The funds we've raised have allowed us to advance the critical preservation of these national treasures. Your additional gift can help us preserve more of the voices and stories of master motion picture artists. We hope you will visit these links today either to make an extra contribution or become an AFI member. Thank you again for your support!
