  • AFI CLOSEUP: SHERYL REINSCHMIDT

Sheryl Reinschmidt, Registrar of the American Film Institute Conservatory, was kind enough to grant us an interview during one of the busiest times of the year for the Conservatory. School may be out for summer, but preparing to welcome the new class for the fall semester keeps the office at a fever pitch. We managed to sneak a few minutes in to speak with her in her second-floor office of the Warner Bros. building, where a Yoda candy jar greets every staff member and Fellow who stops in for a visit.

What do you do for AFI? I handle registration and financial aid for the Conservatory. I am essentially the supervisor for any office that holds official records for the Conservatory. So, we maintain the educational records and the financial aid records for the Conservatory.

What's your best day at AFI? My best day at AFI is probably commencement. Other than commencement, it is when we are able to give scholarships to the incoming Fellows. But the excitement of commencement tops everything.

What does summer entail for you at the Registrar's office? The summer is our busiest period! We are finishing up last year's loose ends, which includes getting grades from the faculty, distributing grades to the Fellows, and ramping up for the fall enrollment period. We also have a summer term for Fellows who are working on finishing up their thesis films.

What aspect of the AFI mission do you identify with? Education, without a doubt. I've been working in higher education for over 20 years so that's where my passion lies, and that's why I'm here.

How long have you worked for AFI? This is my second time working for AFI. I worked as the Director of Financial Aid from 2003 to 2006. Then I came back in 2011 to be the Registrar and supervise financial aid. Six years total.

Where did you grow up? I grew up here in Los Angeles. In fact, I went to junior high school and high school right down the driveway at Immaculate Heart High School. So, I'm back on the hill, as they say.

What don’t your colleagues know about you? I'm a total blabbermouth, so they probably know everything about me. I am pretty much an open book.

Who would you cast to play you in the film about your life? I would combine two people. I would probably combine Melissa McCarthy and Scarlett Johansson. If they could become one person, they would be me.

What’s your favorite movie? STAR WARS. Like everyone else my age, the mythology of the film stayed with me. So, I still have my STAR WARS toys and my STAR WARS lunch box.
